How many times has this scenario played out? It’s almost January. You make the resolution to eat less, exercise more and finally lose that weight – once and for all. New Year’s resolutions are fun to make but extremely difficult to maintain. Research shows that only 8 per cent of those who make resolutions in the New Year will actually stick to them. So how do we ensure that things will be different this time around?

The answer might not lie on your plate after all — it could be in your brain. Experts say weight loss is as much a psychological battle as it is a physical one. If weight loss is in your resolution this year, it’s time to get your mind right! Creating a plan now for a healthier you will help you ring in the New Year on track for real and sustainable results.

1. Set Small Attainable Goals – Don’t just talk or think about what you are trying to achieve, write it down. Writing down measurable and time-specific goals in detail will increase your chances of success. Written goals are 10 times more likely to be reached so make sure to keep a journal to keep track of those goals.

2. Measure Your Progress – Take a moment every day to reflect on your progress. Make a note of both the positive and negative steps taken towards your goals. This allows you to reflect on your progress in a real and honest way each day and recognise how far you’ve come.

3. Limit Your New Year’s Resolutions to what’s achievable – If you have too many things on the list it’s likely you’ll become overwhelmed and start to put things off. Set only a handful of goals at a time. This will force you to limit yourself to things that are at the top of your priority list.

4. Keep it Positive – Choose a positive mantra to remind yourself each day why you’ve set these resolutions and why you’re committing to them!
